Who?

The Cairo Report is an independent, English-language socialist publication covering Egypt: politics, labor, policy, and the structures that shape everyday life.
We practice journalism from below. Egypt cannot be understood through elections, personalities, or geopolitics alone; its trajectory is shaped by the relationship between labor and capital, the organization of production, the role of the military and the state, and the struggles of ordinary people to secure dignity, democracy, and economic justice. So we approach the country through the lens of class, reporting on workers, trade unions, public services, industrial policy, urban development, agriculture, and the institutions that organize political and economic life.
We publish original analysis, essays, investigations, and commentary that connect current events to their historical and structural causes. Our goal is not just to report what happened, but to explain why it happened, who benefits, who bears the costs, and what alternatives exist.
We know that meaningful democracy requires not only political freedoms but economic equality, social ownership, strong public institutions, and the empowerment of working people. The Cairo Report is editorially independent of states, parties, and capital, and committed to rigorous analysis, historical context, and open debate.
We write for wage-earners, students, researchers, organizers, policymakers, and anyone seeking to understand Egypt beyond official narratives and daily headlines. As Marxist journalists, we believe ordinary people are active historical agents, and our mission is to arm them with the information to act as such.

“One of the virtues, perhaps almost the chief virtue, of a newspaper is its independence. Whatever its position or character, at least it should have a soul of its own.” — CP Scott
